All the Feelings

For the past few weeks I have wrestled with lots of questions and feelings about the world we currently live in...so many feelings. A world that I honestly could not image would happen in my lifetime. In the past decade, the mass shootings seem to be part of the weekly news and polarized conversations about every topic, such as gun control, public health both physical and mental, private business, educational curriculum K-Higher Ed, including textbooks, discrimination, funding, voter rights, and ensuring all Americans, infants included, have access to food.

The thought of families having to identify their children broke my heart. More than once in the last two weeks, I have heard people on TV talk about the need to express their anger over different topics just so people can hear them. Is this where we are at, the only way to move the needle is through anger - I hope not. My Mary Poppins outlook on life does not want to believe this is the new normal. I know we have come further than this in our history. I have faith in the majority of people being good people, who do care about their neighbors and the people in their community.

There is a perfect storm right now. It has been brewing for about a decade and I think the events of the last few years has fueled it like warm waters and hurricanes. I am confident it is not too late. It is time to focus on the social and emotional health of our country. If we can move the needle in this area, I am confident it will aid us in tackling the other issues before us.

We do not know how many days each of us is promised so we need to make sure that make the most of the days we have. As the sun comes up on a new day, I hope we focus on coming together to heal. Tell someone you care about them. If you see someone struggling, help them out. Make people feel included and accepted. Hug a loved one.

For tonight . . . I'm just sayin' XOXO
